Statement of Intent

At St. Oswald’s Ladybirds Preschool CIO we are committed to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of our provision. We ensure that every child, family, and staff member is valued and respected, regardless of their background, ability, or circumstances.

Our practice is guided by the principles of the Equality Act 2010 and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), ensuring all children have equal opportunities to learn, develop, and thrive.

Aims

We aim to:

  • Provide a welcoming, inclusive environment for all children and families
  • Promote positive attitudes toward diversity and differences
  • Ensure no child or adult is discriminated against
  • Support every child to reach their full potential
  • Work in partnership with parents and carers

Our Approach

Inclusive Practice

We:

  • Treat all children as individuals with unique needs and interests
  • Adapt activities and environments to ensure accessibility for all
  • Use inclusive resources that reflect diverse cultures, languages, and family structures
  • Celebrate a range of festivals, traditions, and experiences

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

We support children with additional needs in line with the Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice by:

  • Identifying needs early
  • Working with parents, carers, and external professionals
  • Creating individual support plans where needed
  • Ensuring equal access to all activities

Equal Opportunities

We actively challenge discrimination and:

  • Ensure fair access to admissions and services
  • Promote gender equality and challenge stereotypes
  • Support children with English as an Additional Language (EAL)
  • Make reasonable adjustments for disabilities

Working with Families

We:

Staff Responsibilities

All staff will:

  • Promote inclusive values in daily practice
  • Undertake regular training on equality and diversity
  • Challenge discriminatory behaviour or language
  • Act as positive role models for children

Monitoring and Review

This policy is regularly reviewed to ensure it remains effective and in line with current legislation and best practice.

Safeguarding

We recognise that inclusion and equality are closely linked to safeguarding and wellbeing. All children have the right to feel safe, valued, and included.
